Gather The Materials - You will need a box (with a lid), photo paper, a thin piece of metal such as foil, black tape, scissors and a needle.
Make A Pinhole - Using the pin create a tiny hole in the foil. Then cut around it in a square so there is less excess foil.
Cut The Box - Using a cereal box (for example) cut out a small square of the box on the side, in the middle.
Putting The Pinhole In Place - Place the square piece of foil with the hole in the middle on the inside of the square hole of the box, the pinhole should be in the middle of the hole in the box., covering it. Tape it down in place from the inside of the box.
Shutter - Using the tape (has to be black so light cannot pass through) create a flap to go over the pinhole on the outside of the box. Tape the top of the flap down so you can lift it up to see the pinhole, this will act as a shutter.
Load The Photo Paper - Tape down the photo paper on the opposite side of the inside of the box as the pinhole.
Picture Time! - Place the lid on the box and put the flap up so it is covering the pin hole, the box should be completely dark inside (no holes in the box), now you can go in the light and take pictures. Point your camera at what you want to capture, (works best when the lighting is bright) then depending on lighting and clouds hold the shutter open for 30 seconds to 4 minutes then close it. Now go to the dark room to let the photographs develop. The paper from the box will be a negative so you will need to make it a positive by putting another piece of photo paper under the developed negative, face to face (the negative must be on top). Use a piece of glass to press them together and turn on the lights for a few seconds. Make sure the extra photo paper is safe and covered, or it will come out all black. Now develop the positive and voilà!
What is happening in this photograph?
A man in a suit is walking through a launderette.
What can you see in the background?
Washing Machines.
Why is the image circular?
Because the photograph was taken through a washing machine.
How could you explain the marks on the surface of the print?
I think the photograph is taken inside a washing machine which would explain the black marks, from the scratches on the glass. It would also explain the image looking rounded.
Why is the image darker around the edges?
The light is more acute around the edges.
Why is the figure partly transparent (see-through)?
I think because the man is moving, the image blurs aswell as the shutter speed.
How do you think the photographer made this picture?
A camera in a washing machine was left on a timer while the man walked across the room.
If you could speak to the photographer, what would you ask him?
What is the meaning/purpose of the photograph?
What title would you give this photograph and why?
'The Suited Man' because the man is unknown and wearing a suit.
What are the names of the chemicals used to create an image in the darkroom?
The main basic chemicals are Developer, Stop Bath and Fixer.
How do the chemicals develop the image (explain in depth what happens)?
Describe the step-by-step's from unloading the pinhole camera to presenting final outcomes
What safety measures do you need to take when working in the darkroom?
